School starts at 8:09. The first bell rings at 8:04 for students to go to class. Students are not allowed to enter the building until 7:20 a.m.
Where do students get dropped off and picked up?
Students get dropped off on the west side of the building, next to the soccer field. Pick up is the same way. Many parents will park along the street in between Eastview Elementary School and IMS for pick up.
How do I put money on my child's lunch account?
You can send money with your child to school in an envelope with their name on it. They will give it to the cafeteria workers at lunch time.
Where do the kids go when they get to school in the morning?
Fifth graders will sit in the main gym bleachers. Sixth graders are on the other side of the bleachers. Seventh and eighth graders are in the cafeteria. If students need to eat breakfast, that is available. The media center (library) is also open before the school day begins.
How are computers used in fifth grade?
Fifth graders will each be assigned their own Chromebook. Each day, they will pick up their Chromebook from their first class of the day. They will be given a folio to carry their Chromebook in from class to class. They are not allowed to take Chromebooks home. Before leaving school, students will return their Chromebook to their first class so it can charge overnight.
How are teams determined?
Students who receive special education services and students in accelerated classes are first placed accordingly. After that, students are placed randomly by the computer.
How are students placed in accelerated and enriched classes?
There are three main factors when placing students in accelerated and enriched classes: ability, achievement, and student profile scores. Ability is measured using the OTIS Lennon test. Achievement is based on PARCC scores. Student profile scores are completed by their current teachers, assessing their work ethic, responsibility, participation in class, attendance, etc. These are all factored into placing the students into the accelerated and enriched classes. This is done separately for ELA and Math. Not all students who are placed in Accelerated Math will be placed in Enriched ELA, and vice versa. Once the top students are determined, they are separated randomly into two different teams. Each team has its own Enriched ELA and Accelerated Math class.
When do parents find out if their child is placed in an accelerated of enriched class?
Parents will receive a letter in the mail over the summer letting them know that their child was placed in the advanced class(es).
Will fifth graders have contact with older kids?
Not usually. The seventh and eighth graders are on the other side of the building and their paths rarely cross. Fifth and sixth graders may cross paths every once in a while, but still not very often.
Do teachers communicate with each other?
Yes, each team has TEAM time each day to meet with each other, plan, and discuss concerns.
How can parents get involved?
This is one difference from elementary schools, as we don't have class parties in fifth grade. There is a parent organization that they can be part of though. We also have an event at the end of the year called Wacky Olympics and that is where we can use the most parental involvement.
Can I bring in treats for my child's class?
No, due to the severe allergies we have in the building, treats are not allowed.
How and where do students load the buses after school?
Students sit at their assigned lunch tables in the cafeteria until their bus number is called.
